Commonwealth Games 2014 in the News

Its still quite a lot time left for commonwealth games to start making it large in media. Around 6-8 moths before the event we will start hearing news about Glasgow commonwealth games all over media (print, tv, radio and online etc.). So far there isn't much hype in the media about Glasgow commonwealth games but last year common wealth games are still in the highlight due to large amount of corruption done in the hosting country India at that time. Main criminal in that case is Mr Suresh Kalmadi. I'll not take you off topic by talking about a cause i.e a worry for almost al countries in the world.

Let me quickly summarize you about what's going on in the news for commonwealth games:

  1. Sarah Kelly the teenage international runner from Great Britain has recovered from the injury and is expected to make a comeback in the commonwealth games to be held in Glasgow. According to her coach Liz McColgan she is fully fit and training hard for the comeback.
  2. Its rumored that the security costs for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games may cross the budget approved by the Scottish Parliament. Scotish government has already once increased the security budget from £373m to £524m, but the new budget suggest that this may need to be increase further.
  3. Atos which is one of the leading international IT company has been named one of the sponsor of the Commonwealth Games 2014. Information about the same can be found at Atos website as well.
  4. This is not a news but an update or reminder for you that games will be held in July and August 2014

Rugby sevens stadium inaugurated in New Delhi University

The swanky Delhi University Stadium, a Commonwealth Games venue for rugby, was inaugurated on Thursday by Sports Minister MS Gill, who said maintaining the infrastructure coming up for the mega-event after the Games was a "big challenge" before the organisers, reports Hindustan Times. "This stadium is a gift to the Delhi University. The games will be held in it, but this gift will remain with you forever. The work here started only in 2008 and I am happy that a sprawling complex has come up in just two years," Gill said at the function.
Later talking to reporters, he said maintaining stadiums after the sporting events is a challenge that every host country faces. "I went to Athens, Melbourne and even China for either Olympics or Commonwealth Games. The authorities there too said it remained a challenge," he added.
To a query that Games venues may be handed over to the private players, Gill said: "A proper strategy is going to come very soon. But, what we can assure is that public and the players will not face any problem."
Speaking at the function, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said it was an important day in the history of Delhi University and such a facility will inspire students to sports.
"Its a great legacy for the Varsity," said Dikshit, a DU alumni.
The stadium has been built up in 10,000 sq metres with a seating capacity of 2,500 permanent seats and 7,500 temporary ones.

Green Commonwealth games 2010

t’s a race against time and pollution. In an effort to ensure that this year’s Commonwealth Games are green and pollution-free, Pune’s scientists and environmentalists are making frequent trips to the capital, training students and volunteers to collect data for an ‘emission inventory’.

Dr Gufran Beig, a scientist at Pune’s Indian Institute of Tropical Meterology, Dr Ajay Ojha, former chief of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s air quality management cell and experts from the city’s Chest Research Foundation have embarked upon the voluminous task of preparing an emission inventory for the National Capital Region (NCR).

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has developed the technology being used to carry out the research.

Beig, a scientist with IITM's System of Air Pollution Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) explained how the involvement of over 100 students from colleges and universities in Delhi would help in the effort.

“We are in the process of preparing an emission inventory that will account for the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere,’’Beig told Newsline. This includes a detailed survey of ‘sources’ and examining what quantities of air pollutants are emitted and their origin.

Beig who conducted a brainstorming workshop in New Delhi to encourage and motivate students on how to collect data to form an ‘emission inventory’ said that the process was extremely tedious. “The month-long programme that started on March 11 included 100 students who were stationed at 40 major junctions in the National Capital Region (NCR) region,” said Ojha, who is presently the coordinator with the project.

With the aim of predicting the air quality 24 hours in advance, students divided into groups have identified 21 major sources of pollution. Students who have been allocated their groups at five cities-Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Delhi and Gaziabad begin their day by collecting data on the number of vehicles that pass by at a major junction.

“While one group ask motorists details about the fuel he/she uses, another group lists details from hotels about the LPG consumption. One group of students has been given the task of collecting data on kerosene and coals being used by slum dwellers at a certain area. One group even has the task of using a vaccum cleaner and collecting the dust on the road in one sq mt area. This kind of sample survey is underway presently and 80 per cent of the work has been completed,” said Ojha.
