Commonwealth Games 2010 - Tips for tourists visiting India
Commonwealth Games organisers have compiled an extensive list of hints and tips for visitors to the October event, the guide providing a valuable insight into social mores as well as helping to avoid embarrassing situations.
Visitors to the Delhi multi-sports gathering now understand that greeting an Indian woman with a peck on the cheek is frowned upon, public displays of affection are strictly off limits and they should not panic if strangers stare at them.
Also, it is always safer to use bottled water while brushing teeth, discussing politics is fine but not religion, while knees and shoulders should be covered at holy places.
The guide puts a lot of stress on sartorial modesty and respecting local customs, especially important when visiting temples and religious sites, where trousers or full-length skirts should be worn and shoulders should be covered.
Published on the official website (www.cwgdelhi2010.org) for the Games, organisers also explain that in Sikh temples your head must be covered and that the better-dressed tourists were likely to be the ones attracting the least attention.
However, the guide does add that "even in the most cosmopolitan Indian cities, the chances are that your different appearance might mean that you will be stared at. Please do not be offended, no harm is meant, it is just curiosity."
The traditional Indian Namaste, with folded palms, is advocated as a good way to win friends in Delhi while shaking hands with a woman, or greeting her with a kiss, might raise a few eyebrows.
"If she extends her hand, you must reciprocate but don't be the first to extend your hand," is the advice for male tourists, who are also informed that a peck on the cheek is appropriate only when the woman in question is a model or beauty queen.
The guide adds that Indians are prone to shake their heads during conversations and visitors should suppress their amusement if they found it funny.
For those worried about hygiene, organisers say it is better to avoid public toilet facilities, which can be of dubious cleanliness, and carry tissues or wet wipes.
Last month, the organising committee announced beef would not be served during the Oct. 3-14 Games, respecting local dietary traditions.

Rugby sevens stadium inaugurated in New Delhi University
The swanky Delhi University Stadium, a Commonwealth Games venue for rugby, was inaugurated on Thursday by Sports Minister MS Gill, who said maintaining the infrastructure coming up for the mega-event after the Games was a "big challenge" before the organisers, reports Hindustan Times. "This stadium is a gift to the Delhi University. The games will be held in it, but this gift will remain with you forever. The work here started only in 2008 and I am happy that a sprawling complex has come up in just two years," Gill said at the function.
Later talking to reporters, he said maintaining stadiums after the sporting events is a challenge that every host country faces. "I went to Athens, Melbourne and even China for either Olympics or Commonwealth Games. The authorities there too said it remained a challenge," he added.
To a query that Games venues may be handed over to the private players, Gill said: "A proper strategy is going to come very soon. But, what we can assure is that public and the players will not face any problem."
Speaking at the function, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said it was an important day in the history of Delhi University and such a facility will inspire students to sports.
"Its a great legacy for the Varsity," said Dikshit, a DU alumni.
The stadium has been built up in 10,000 sq metres with a seating capacity of 2,500 permanent seats and 7,500 temporary ones.

Green Commonwealth games 2010
t’s a race against time and pollution. In an effort to ensure that this year’s Commonwealth Games are green and pollution-free, Pune’s scientists and environmentalists are making frequent trips to the capital, training students and volunteers to collect data for an ‘emission inventory’.
Dr Gufran Beig, a scientist at Pune’s Indian Institute of Tropical Meterology, Dr Ajay Ojha, former chief of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s air quality management cell and experts from the city’s Chest Research Foundation have embarked upon the voluminous task of preparing an emission inventory for the National Capital Region (NCR).
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has developed the technology being used to carry out the research.
Beig, a scientist with IITM's System of Air Pollution Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) explained how the involvement of over 100 students from colleges and universities in Delhi would help in the effort.
“We are in the process of preparing an emission inventory that will account for the amount of pollutants discharged into the atmosphere,’’Beig told Newsline. This includes a detailed survey of ‘sources’ and examining what quantities of air pollutants are emitted and their origin.
Beig who conducted a brainstorming workshop in New Delhi to encourage and motivate students on how to collect data to form an ‘emission inventory’ said that the process was extremely tedious. “The month-long programme that started on March 11 included 100 students who were stationed at 40 major junctions in the National Capital Region (NCR) region,” said Ojha, who is presently the coordinator with the project.
With the aim of predicting the air quality 24 hours in advance, students divided into groups have identified 21 major sources of pollution. Students who have been allocated their groups at five cities-Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Delhi and Gaziabad begin their day by collecting data on the number of vehicles that pass by at a major junction.
“While one group ask motorists details about the fuel he/she uses, another group lists details from hotels about the LPG consumption. One group of students has been given the task of collecting data on kerosene and coals being used by slum dwellers at a certain area. One group even has the task of using a vaccum cleaner and collecting the dust on the road in one sq mt area. This kind of sample survey is underway presently and 80 per cent of the work has been completed,” said Ojha.
