Commonwelath Games 2010 - First Green Commonweath Games

Chairman of the organizing committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Suresh Kalmadi has announced that commonealth games this time would be a focussing on environment and will focus on reducing the carbon footprint to hold the first-ever Green Commonwealth Games. This step could prove to be a benchmark for other majot sporting events to be held in future. Kalmadi annouced that India will invest in green infrastructure and pro-active waste management.

Continuing with our last post, qeen's baton enjoyed a stint in the Langford Pool at Saint Halier (Jersey). The baton was protected by specially designed float.

After travellin through different locations in Europe the queens baton reached Jersey. Jersey is a British dependency off the coast of Normandy (France). Till now the baton has traveled 190000 kilometres.

Sports activities in commonwealth games 2010

The Commonelath games in 2010 will feature competotion in 17 sporting events. The schedule for the same was approved by CGF General Assembly meeting in Colombo from 5 to 9 November. Games to be played are listed below:

1. Aquatics: Will include water sports like Swimming, Synchronised Swimming and Diving
2. Archery: Less chences for India though we have seen lots of archery champions in history TV programs.
3. Athletics: Track and Field includin Walk and Marathon competition.
4. Badminton : Some hope for a medal here.
5. Boxing: After Bejing olympics India can be assured fro a medal in this event.
6. Cycling (Track, Road Mass Start and Road Time Trials)
7. Gymnastics: No change be it rythematic or artistic.
8. Hockey: This was the game in which India hope for a gold medal once, now may be the home ground advantage can give us a ray of hope for a medal.
9. Lawn Bowls: I have no idea of if there is any participation from India in this game.
10. Netball:
11. Rugby 7s
12. Shooting (Pistol, Small Bore, Full Bore and Clay Target) : Nice ame defence personal can be medal winner.
13. Squash
14. Table Tennis
15. Tennis
16. Weightlifting
17. Wrestling

Shera - The Commonwealth Games 2010 Mascot

Above is the picture of 19th commonwealth games official mascot Shera. Shera will be the most visible face during the tournament and his name is taken from Hindi word Sher which means Tiger signifying achiever with a positive attitude.
